Master the Kitchen Line: New Pickleball Drill Reveals Game-Changing Partner Tactics

Master the Kitchen Line: Rob from Selkirk TV introduced a new pickleball drill on partner movement and court positioning at the kitchen line. The drill, shared in an instructional session, shows how players can improve their coordination and coverage by moving in sync. The session was recorded and published by Selkirk TV.

Players were encouraged to work on moving together and covering for each other. Rob said, “So you really want to be moving in tandem pretty much all the time.” He emphasized that many teams get caught out of position when a partner makes a speed-up move the other isn’t expecting. “What happens a lot of the times is I’ll play with a new partner, I’ll hit the normal speed-ups that I like to hit… but my partner is not used to me speeding up there.”

Building Better Court Awareness

In the drill, Rob and his partner demonstrate how movement should follow the ball. If one player is pulled wide, the other steps in to cover the middle. “What I want to see is if Jamie Su gets pulled out wide… I’m coming right here covering middle.” He added, “We’re just following the ball basically.”

He showed how a player should always return to the center of their court box after each shot. “If I hit this, I’m coming right back here. I’m never just kind of hitting the ball and staying still.”

Tactics to Handle Speed-Ups

Rob also explained the importance of discussing personal play styles before matches. “This is something you should be talking about before your match actually… talk about where you like speeding up,” he advised.

Using an example from the drill, he said, “That’s the example of when I speed up and my partner’s not ready… they’re cut off guard.” He noted one of his habits is to “hook that speed up down the middle.” In such cases, he said, “All you need to do is sit backhand, cover backhand, give her the forehand. If she can make that ball somehow over there, good shot.”

Impact on Team Play

This drill aims to build trust and predictability between partners. It teaches players how to recover quickly and position themselves for the next shot. Learning when and how to move can reduce open court space and make it harder for opponents to exploit weaknesses.

Rob closed by pointing players to more learning options. “If you want more lessons and want to continue to evolve your game, you can subscribe at Selkirk TV for more tips, more podcasts.”
