Morgan Evans’ Pickleball Tips: The Hawaii Pacific Health ESPN Honolulu Open, presented by HMSA, kicked off on April 10 at the Hawaii Convention Center and is set to run through the weekend. While the event is already sold out for players, the public is invited to visit and enjoy the exciting action, attend clinics, and experience over 30 pickleball courts.
Morgan Evans Shares Expert Pickleball Tips
One of the highlights of Friday’s event was professional pickleball player, Morgan Evans, who offered some valuable tips to KHON2’s Kamaka Pili. Evans demonstrated the “dink shot,” an important technique in pickleball. To execute the dink shot, Evans explained the following:
“What we are going to do is get you behind the kitchen line, nice and close, within a few inches of the net. Now, let’s get down to a nice, low stance. I like that you have worn some incredibly athletic shoes today. Dress for the job.” – (Evans)
The goal is to make a small, controlled shot that lands inside the opponent’s kitchen (the non-volley zone), making it challenging for them to attack. Evans emphasized the importance of maintaining a low, soft shot to prevent opponents from attacking.
“When I am doing this, it’s very hard for you to attack me. If I play a good enough dink, something soft inside the kitchen, then it’s difficult for you to attack.” – (Evans)
Pickleball for All Ages
The event also featured plenty of kupuna (older adults) enjoying the game, which Evans noted is a great way to stay active and engaged. “Pickleball is for everybody!” he said, encouraging people of all ages to give it a try.

Though the tournament is sold out, visitors can still attend the event at the Hawaii Convention Center, which runs until Sunday, April 13. The public can enjoy clinics, product demonstrations, and explore the many courts set up for the event. Tournament matches begin each day at 8:30 a.m. and run until 8 p.m.
