Pickleball Surge in Eurobodalla: Pickleball is quickly becoming a favorite sport in Eurobodalla, with new courts opening and more locals picking up paddles. Part-time Narooma resident Kirk Ryder says it is the fastest-growing sport in the world, and Eurobodallans are embracing it in large numbers.
Pickleball: A Fun New Sport for Everyone
Pickleball combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong. The ball is lightweight and larger than a tennis ball, and the court is half the size of a tennis court. There is less running and hitting hard, making it easier and more fun for players of all ages and skill levels.
“The rules make for short games, with a lot of back and forth and quick turn around. You can learn the skills quickly but there’s a lot of nuance as you progress,” Kirk Ryder said.
Pickleball is known for its quick matches and social atmosphere. In the United States, where Kirk also spends part of the year, over 36 million people play pickleball, and the number keeps rising.
“You can go to the courts any morning and there will be a couple of dozen people to play with. Then, of course, you go out for coffee after,” said Kirk.
Pickleball Facilities Growing Across Eurobodalla
Eurobodalla Council is helping the sport grow by adding marked indoor courts at Hanging Rock basketball stadium and Narooma Leisure Centre. There are also outdoor courts at Bill Smyth Oval in Narooma where players bring their own paddles, nets, and balls.
In Moruya, Next Generation Tennis runs pickleball games on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday evenings at the Shore Street tennis courts.
More people across the shire are joining clubs and community groups to play, showing the sport’s strong social and community appeal.
Pickleball’s Bright Future in Eurobodalla
Pickleball’s easy learning curve and strong social aspect are helping it thrive in Eurobodalla. With Council support and growing local interest, the sport is likely to continue expanding. As more courts and programs open, even more residents are expected to join in the fun.
