Andre Agassi’s Pickleball Partnership: Andre Agassi shared that he enjoys playing pickleball alongside his wife, Steffi Graf, rather than against her. Speaking on the Bad Calls Pickleball Podcast, Agassi explained how their partnership on the court brings out the best in both of them during pickleball events.
Pickleball Slam Success
Agassi and Graf recently competed at Pickleball Slam 3 in February. The event was held at the Michelob ULTRA Arena at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino. They faced US Open champion Andy Roddick and Wimbledon finalist Eugenie Bouchard.
Agassi and Graf won the match and secured a $1 million prize. This victory marked their third consecutive win at Pickleball Slam.
Playing Together, Not Against
Agassi discussed his preference for teaming up with Graf. He shared how playing on the same side works better for them.
“She’s a gamer. If anything’s important to her, then it’s go time, she pulls it off. Me, I’m like, it’s just – relax a little bit – so she’s the real deal. We’re having fun doing it together. We have to play on the same side. Not really against, unless the match up was (such) – so, you know, her level goes down when she plays against me.” – (Agassi)
“And I’m like, I mean, she goes down, and I feel bad, it’s like that bad, what do you call that when you enable somebody, spiral down as a couple, but we just start playing worse, but when we’re together it’s, like good.” – (Agassi)
Steffi Graf’s Doubles Challenges
Agassi also mentioned Graf’s past struggles with doubles play. Even though she was successful, including winning the 1988 Wimbledon doubles title, she found it difficult.
“She always struggled with doubles, although she won a Slam in doubles, she struggled because she always worried about letting her partner down. She’s totally in her own head, and that’s how I am, so I don’t get upset at her for something, I get upset at myself for something. So sometimes we can get negative, but collectively negative about ourselves.” – (Agassi)
Growing Love for Pickleball
Agassi and Graf have embraced pickleball. Their teamwork and love for the game have helped grow the sport’s popularity. Their success at Pickleball Slam shows how even top athletes enjoy new challenges together. As they continue to play, they inspire many fans to try the sport and enjoy it as a team activity.
