Fast Fix for Missed Returns

Tomassi addressed a common issue among players—missing hard-hit third-shot drives into the net. He explained that these mistakes often come from timing problems when trying to move the paddle into position quickly.

“To counteract that, when you see someone driving the ball at you, I want you to change your ready position from here to all the way out,” said Tomassi.

He demonstrated how keeping the paddle already out in front eliminates the need for split-second timing adjustments. Players just need to track whether the ball is coming to their forehand or backhand side and punch it back.

When to Use the Technique

Tomassi explained that this trick is best for players who are regularly making mistakes against fast drives. He acknowledged that loading up for an aggressive counterattack allows for more power—but that comes with more risk.

“Granted you can hit the ball much harder if you load up and attack it,” he said. “But this technique of being already out in front is just if you’re consistently missing balls into the net.”

Knowing When to Attack

While the ready-out technique is useful, Tomassi emphasized that he doesn’t always play this way. If the opponent’s drive isn’t extremely fast, he prefers to take control and attack.

“The way I play is if the opponent isn’t absolutely smashing the drive, I’ll attack it. But if they hit the ball really hard, I’ll just prepare to just get it back,” Tomassi shared.

Helping More Players Play Smart

Tomassi’s advice is designed for players of all skill levels who struggle with fast returns. His technique encourages smart preparation instead of rushed reactions.

With more players learning how to stay calm and ready against hard shots, this simple change could help boost confidence and control during competitive play. Fans can expect more instructional content from Tomassi soon.
