Pickleball Winning Strategies by Kyle Koszuta: Kyle Koszuta recently shared three useful strategies on where to place return shots in pickleball. In a video message posted online, Koszuta explained how smart shot placement can help players win more side outs by causing confusion and forcing tough decisions on their opponents.
Koszuta’s advice focused on hitting the return of serve to specific spots on the court. His tips are meant to improve players’ chances of gaining control of the game by targeting common weak areas. The three shot placements he shared are simple, effective, and based on how opponents react under pressure.
Targeting the Middle for Confusion
Koszuta’s first tip was to aim the return to the middle of the court.
“Middle of the court causes a decision to be made between both partners,” he explained. “And if you make teams communicate enough with each other, you know they won’t. So that can give you more points.”
This move puts pressure on opponents to quickly decide who should take the ball, often leading to miscommunication.

Going After the Backhand Side
His second tip advised players to hit the ball toward the left foot of the player on the right side of the court.
“Why? Because one, this is often if this is a righty right here… this player’s backhand,” Koszuta said. “And two, often this player will have to make a decision again whether they should come over to help take that ball or should they let this player take that ball with their backhand.”
This pickleball strategy increases the chance of creating confusion and forcing weaker returns.
Exploiting Weak Backhands
Koszuta’s third return target is the backhand side of the player on the left.
“Same reason,” he said. “Weaker backhands mean they’re not gonna hit as good of a shot towards you.”
He added that these placements are flexible depending on who is returning and where they stand, encouraging players to adjust based on matchups.
Why This Matters
These tips provide simple, game-changing advice for pickleball players at all levels. By focusing on placement and strategy, players can gain more control and force errors. Koszuta’s suggestions can help beginners and experienced players improve their chances during serve returns and earn more side-outs.
