Higginson Brothers’ Pickleball Debut: Zach and Samuel Higginson, brothers from Fort Myers, competed in pro men’s doubles for the first time at the Minto US Open Pickleball Championships, held at East Naples Community Park. Surrounded by a lively crowd, including tennis legend Ivan Lendl, the brothers looked to defend their home turf.
A Hometown Event with Big Energy
The Minto US Open Pickleball Championships brought together players from all over, filling the East Naples courts with energy. For the Higginson brothers, it was more than a tournament—it was personal.
“This is probably one of the biggest events. Is one of the most fun events. Everyone turns out for it. So you get to see all the familiar faces competing. And it’s just, it’s a it’s a hometown for us.” – (Zach)
The two grew up nearby and were excited to join the event as pro doubles partners for the first time.
Finding Their Rhythm on the Court
Despite the challenges of playing as a new team, the Higginsons showed moments of strong chemistry.
“Sometimes we could just run off, get in a group and just run off points, like 6,7,8 in a row. And that’s the best times and then other times it’s, you know, you’re a little bit, maybe not on the same page, but we’re slowly getting better at that.” – (Zach)
The brothers come from a large family of 12 siblings, where sports were always part of life. Zach, already active in pickleball, encouraged Samuel, a former tennis player, to join the sport.
“I just thought, I mean, I’m like, the most athletic in my family, and this guy was, was better than me at something. So I was like, You know what? I’m gonna get better than him and just destroy the pro tour.” – (Samuel)
“Well, I will the last I did tap him out last time we did some jiu-jitsu ping pong. So he’s not fully honest with you guys.” – (zach)
Trust and Teamwork Drive the Duo
Despite their fun back-and-forth, the brothers share a strong connection on the court.
“It’s good to have someone that you know and you know well to play with out there. And you can trust that they’re gonna give their best and try hard.” – (Samuel)
Their teamwork and local pride added to the excitement of the championship weekend in Naples.
Building Momentum and Brotherhood
Playing in a high-profile tournament gave the brothers a chance to grow as a team and gain more experience in pro competition. Their connection, local ties, and competitive spirit could make them a team to watch in future events. For now, they’re enjoying the challenge together and making memories on the court.
