Selkirk Project 008 Paddle Surprises Testers With Bigger Sweet Spot, Is This the Game-Changer Pickleball Needs?

Selkirk Project 008 Pickleball Paddle Review: Selkirk Labs has launched two new paddles, the Project 008 Tour Shape in 13 mm and 16 mm versions. Pickleball reviewer Kip tested the paddles and found them more versatile and accurate than previous models. Both paddles offer control, spin, and a more functional design for most players.

Updated Design Offers More Surface Area

The new 008 paddles are an improvement over the Project 006. While the 006 had a round, harsh design, the 008 paddles feature a better hitting surface. Kip said, “I liked the 006 a lot—it’s a great paddle, but the surface space kind of limited you.” He believes the 008 models will suit more players.

Both paddles feature Selkirk’s Pure Foam Core with Gen 2 thermoforming. This adds foam around the edge for better structure and accuracy. Kip compared it to past foam core paddles like the Rhombus Ripple and Flick F1 but said Selkirk’s version stands out.

Specs Show Strong Build and Balance

The paddles come with a T700 raw carbon fiber face, 16.45-inch length, 7.5-inch width, and a 6-inch grip. The stock weight is 7.9 ounces. Kip adjusted both to 8.2 ounces, keeping the balance unchanged. The swing weight is 116.6, and twist weight is 5.76. “That’s what they come in at, so that’s what I’m going to stick with,” Kip said.

On-Court Results Highlight Strengths

Testing started with the 16 mm version. Kip noted it performed well, even in windy conditions. He added, “When I tried to spin the ball, it did more whistling than spinning… it really has great spin.” He then tried the 13 mm paddle and noted, “If I hit right in the middle of the face, that’s going to be gold.”

Performance in Power, Control, and Spin

Kip expected certain results but said the paddles “surprised me quite a bit.” He credited the Gen 2 thermoforming for better control. In terms of power, the 13 mm paddle produced speeds of 48–50 mph, while the 16 mm reached 47 mph.

Kip said, “Control was excellent on both.” Spin was strong on both, and the paddles gave good feedback. “You don’t lose much performance outside the sweet spot because it’s so large,” especially on the 16 mm.

Custom Options and Real-Game Benefits

Kip found both paddles easy to use from defense to offense. “You can dig the ball back and reset very well, then transition to the net smoothly,” he said. The paddles are also easy to customize. He noted that players could add weight to the tip for more power without upsetting the balance.

News in Brief: Selkirk Project 008 Pickleball Paddle Review

Selkirk Labs has released the Project 008 Tour Shape paddles in 13 mm and 16 mm versions. Reviewer Kip praised their improved surface area, strong control, and impressive spin. The Gen 2 thermoforming design and $288 price make them a promising pick for players seeking versatile, foam-core paddles this season.
