Thomas Wilson’s Health Issues: Professional pickleball player Thomas Wilson recently shared his struggles with a serious health condition that has kept him off the Professional Pickleball Association (PPA) Tour since June. In an emotional interview with podcast host Hannah Johns, Thomas also spoke about adopting a second child and finding new ways to stay involved in the sport he loves.
Thomas Wilson, once ranked as high as No. 2 in the world for mixed doubles and within the top 10 for men’s doubles, hasn’t played a tournament since mid-2024. He explained that ongoing medical issues have made it hard for him to breathe and even move at times, causing him to pause his competitive career.
A Scary Turn in Health
Thomas Wilson said his symptoms started with light breathing trouble but got worse over time. He felt weak, and his muscles began twitching. While at a tournament, he went to urgent care and was later hospitalized in Texas. Doctors feared he might have something severe, like ALS, but no clear answer was found.
He remembered how tough the hospital stay was. “I was even having some discussions with people about end-of-life care, which was really hard,” he said. He was later moved to the Mayo Clinic for more tests. Still, doctors couldn’t figure out what was wrong.
Afterward, Thomas Wilson went to National Jewish Health in Denver. There, doctors thought he might have an autoimmune issue, which may be linked to his Hashimoto’s hypothyroidism. He is now taking hydroxychloroquine to manage his immune system and trying other treatments like peptides and stem cells with a naturopathic doctor.
Life Changes and Financial Strain
The health battle took a financial toll on Thomas Wilson. He had just left his job before getting sick and missed the chance to enroll in COBRA insurance. This left him without coverage until the start of 2025. Despite the hardship, he said, “I’ve just had to prioritize health and family over money.”
He talked about missing the energy of being on tour, saying, “I’ve been so lucky to do what I’ve done. I’ve just missed being around the game and the people.”
Staying Close to the Game
Even while recovering, Thomas Wilson has stayed involved in pickleball. He has begun working as a commentator at tournaments. This role lets him remain close to the sport and the players. He is also excited about a new pickleball venue called Oakfire Ridge being built near his home, where he hopes to play a part.
“I’ve been so grateful for the support I’ve received from other players and people in the pickleball world,” he said.
Growing His Family Through Adoption
Thomas Wilson and his family are preparing to welcome a new baby girl, Haven, who is the biological sister of his first daughter, Holland. Both children are being adopted. The family is working through the emotional and legal parts of the process, which have not been easy.
Thomas shared his respect for the birth mother and her hardships. “We just feel grateful and really blessed,” he said. “I just want to have compassion for her and what she’s going through.”
He added that while dealing with his health and preparing for Haven’s birth has been challenging, his faith has given him strength. “For me, it’s a journey that I believe is not just random, but it’s guided,” he said.
Looking Ahead to Pickleball’s Future
Although Thomas Wilson is not ready to return to competitive play yet, he still believes he can come back. He is hopeful and inspired by how fast the sport is growing and how exciting it has become for fans and players.
He believes his style fits the way the game is now played. “I’m eager to see how the game continues to evolve,” he said. “Hopefully, I can find my way back on the court.”
