Pickleball’s Sky Lob Practice Strategy: Kyle Koszuta, a well-known pickleball player, shared a useful tip for players who find themselves in trouble during a match. He suggests using the “Sky Lob” when off balance or out of position. This simple shot can turn a losing point into a winning one by giving players time to recover.
A Smart Solution for Difficult Moments
Many players struggle when pulled out of position, facing strong spin, or scrambling to stay on the point. Kyle Koszuta believes the Sky Lob is a helpful shot in these moments. He said, “If you get off balance in a point, or you’re scrambling in a point, or you’re behind in the point, try a Sky Lob.”
This shot, hit high and deep, can give players the chance to reset. It helps them get back in balance and return to their spot on the court. Koszuta added, “A Sky Lob allows you to get back on balance. It allows you to get back in position, especially if you got pulled off the court.”

When to Use the Sky Lob
Koszuta recommends using the Sky Lob in two main situations. First, when a player gets pulled wide or deep and cannot recover quickly. Second, when a ball with extreme spin becomes hard to handle. In both cases, the Sky Lob buys time and slows the game down.
“If someone gives you extreme spin and you feel uncomfortable handling that ball, you might just sky lob it,” said Koszuta.
He also explained that a good Sky Lob can confuse opponents. “Often if you hit that shot well enough, high enough, and deep enough, the player going back, both players, they’ll often get disoriented and they won’t realize where on the court they are because they’re looking up and they’ve lost vision of what’s in front of them,” he said.
Why It Makes a Difference
Using the Sky Lob allows players to reset the rally. It can shift the momentum and give a player time to return to a better spot on the court. Koszuta believes this tactic is not talked about enough, but it can turn defense into offense.
The Sky Lob is a simple yet powerful shot that helps players stay in the game, even when they are struggling. Learning when and how to use it can help players win more points and build confidence under pressure.
