Sonora Pickleball Court Project Approved with $175K Budget Shift

Sonora Pickleball Court Project: The Sonora City Council has approved a $175,000 contract with Sinclair General Engineering Construction of Oakdale to build a new pickleball court at Woods Creek Rotary Park. The decision was made with a 4-0 vote and will be funded by a state grant from the Outdoor Access for All Act of 2018.

The park is located on Woods Creek Drive, just off Highway 49. The city made changes to its original plan in response to growing interest in pickleball. Instead of a basketball court, playground upgrades, or a shade structure, officials chose to move forward with just the pickleball court due to budget limits.

Changing the Plan

Sonora Community Development Director Tyler Summersett explained that the original idea included multiple upgrades.

“Along the way, we modified the project to acknowledge the growing popularity of pickleball, and a few years passed, and all of a sudden, of all those items, we could only afford the pickleball court.”-(Tyler Summersett )

Construction Details

Sinclair General Engineering Construction was the only company to submit a bid for the project, offering a price of $187,000. To meet the city’s budget of $175,000, changes were made to reduce the cost of the court’s fencing.

Construction is expected to take 40 working days once it begins.

What This Means for Sonora

The new pickleball court adds to the city’s recreational offerings and reflects the sport’s fast-growing popularity. While the full plan could not be completed, the decision ensures that residents will still benefit from a modern sports facility.
