Inside the National Pickleball League: How 50+ Athletes Are Redefining Pro Sports in America

The National Pickleball League (NPL) is the first pro league made just for players aged 50 and older. Launched in 2022, the league gives older athletes a place to compete at a high level across the United States. To join, players must be 50 or older with a rating of 4.5 or higher.

America’s First 50+ Pickleball League

The National Pickleball League is focused on older players who want to stay active in professional sports. With 12 teams and over 180 players, the league hosts matches in cities like Seattle, Naples, and Princeton. All NPL players are at least 50 years old, and many have strong athletic backgrounds.

The NPL says, “NPL gives fans a community to connect to, players a chance to pursue their passion, and reminds everyone that age should never be a barrier.”

The league’s teams include:

  • Austin Ignite

  • Boca Surge

  • Denver Iconics

  • Indy Drivers

  • Naples JBB United

  • Oklahoma City Punishers

  • Coachella Valley Scorpions

  • Columbus Hotshots

  • Houston Hammers

  • Kansas City Stingers

  • Princeton Bruisers

  • Seattle Tsunami

Stars and Owners of the League

Each team in the National Pickleball League is privately owned. Some teams have famous owners or players. The Coachella Valley Scorpions are co-owned by Kim Jagd, a pro pickleball player, and Vince Vaughn, a well-known actor.

Former football star Danny Wuerffel, who once won the Heisman Trophy and played in the NFL, is now a player for the Denver Iconics.

How to Join the NPL

To become part of the league, interested players must meet two rules: be 50 or older and have a pickleball rating of at least 4.5. Those who qualify can apply to attend a combine—an event where players compete in round-robin doubles matches with different partners.

According to the NPL, “The top two men and women performers (four players total) will receive an automatic spot on an NPL Team upon their draft registration.”

Why It Matters

The NPL proves that age is not a limit in sports. It helps experienced players stay in the game and gives fans a new league to support. As the league grows, more combines and teams may appear, giving more players a chance to join the action.
