James Ignatowich Reveals the Secret to Mastering Pickleball’s Two-Handed Backhand Drive

James Ignatowich’s Two-Handed Backhand Tips: Pickleball professional James Ignatowich is teaching players how to add topspin using a two-handed backhand drive. This shot is especially useful when playing on the left side of the court and allows players to avoid running around their backhand to hit a forehand.

Why the Left Hand Is Key

James Ignatowich focuses on the importance of the left hand in this shot. He explains that most of the power, spin, and control should come from the left hand when hitting the ball.

“So, for me, the two-handed backhand drive is all about the left hand. So, I’m staying down with my legs and I’m trying not to move up and definitely not lean back. But the key thing here is using your left hand to really generate most of your power, your control, and get the outside of the ball.”(James Ignatowich)

Training with the Left Hand

James Ignatowich recommends players practice left-handed forehand drives to improve their backhand drive.

“A key tip to have a good two-handed backhand drive is actually practicing lefty forehand drives. So, if you can hit a good lefty forehand drive, I’m pretty sure you’ll be able to hit a good two-handed backhand drive.”

He shows that with practice, the motion becomes easier, and players can smoothly add the right hand as a guide.

“So then since you’ve had a lefty forehand drive, it’ll be easy to just put your right hand on the paddle and just serve as a guiding mechanism. You’re not going to be using it to generate much more power. You’re kind of just using it to control the swing.”

Better Control and Power

James Ignatowich demonstrates how adding the right hand helps with control while the left hand continues to provide the power. He emphasizes staying balanced, keeping the knees bent, and avoiding leaning back to stay in control during the swing.

Improving Pickleball Technique

This instructional series helps players at all levels understand how to use proper hand placement and movement to create topspin. Learning this skill can help make their shots more effective and give them an advantage on the court.
