Should You Ditch Your Practice Partner? Pickleball Pro Reveals When Ball Machines Give You the Edge

Pickleball Training with Ball Machine: A pickleball player shared advice on whether to train with a ball machine or a practice partner. The player explained that ball machines are useful when learning a new stroke because they can feed many balls without help from another person.

Learning with a Ball Machine

The player said, “Ball machines are great if you’re trying to learn a specific stroke. For example, if you are trying to learn the forehand drive, the ball machine is great because it can just feed you a million times and you’re not inconveniencing somebody else to have to feed you balls.”

Personal Experience

They shared a personal story of learning the backhand flick by using the ball machine for many hours. The player added, “I learned my backhand flick from hitting a million shots on the ball machine from heights up here, down here. It really allowed me to learn and figure out the shot without having to have somebody else stand there and feed.”

Benefits of Practicing with People

However, the player also pointed out that once someone has solid fundamentals, it’s better to practice with another person. Practicing with someone is more like real games and helps improve faster in match situations. The player explained, “If you have the fundamentals of your shots down, meaning you understand the form and you can hit it well, I don’t think the ball machine is as necessary. And I would prefer to practice with a person.”

Real-Game Scenarios Matter

The player continued, “At this stage in my game, I’m always looking to drill across from a person because it’s more gamelike. The ball machine is for repetition. Another player is for game scenario.”

Overall, the advice was clear: beginners may benefit most from the ball machine, while advanced players should focus on real practice with partners to prepare for competition.
