Hurricane Tyra Black’s Pickleball Journey: Hurricane Tyra Black, a 24-year-old from Florida, is quickly becoming a standout star in professional pickleball. Ranked No. 5 in women’s doubles and No. 8 in mixed doubles on the Professional Pickleball Association Tour, she is gaining national attention for her skill and her inspiring journey into the sport.
From Tennis to Pickleball
Hurricane Tyra Black began playing tennis at age three and competed in singles and doubles events on the ITF Women’s World Tennis Tour. But the pressures of the tennis circuit became overwhelming. A friend introduced her to pickleball, and Black soon found herself enjoying the game and community far more than tennis.
“Everyone was so welcoming and so amazing,” said Tyra Black. “They helped me with pretty much anything and everything. When I first started, it was just an amazing experience. I was having so much fun on the court, off the court, making so many new friends and just meeting some amazing people. So the transition was pretty seamless for me, honestly.”
She turned professional in pickleball in 2023 and became one of the first Black women to reach the top 10 in rankings. She also helped lead the Dallas Flash to a championship win in the 2024 Major League Pickleball season.
Finding Belonging Through Sport
Black’s success in pickleball has meant even more to her because of the racism and isolation she experienced in tennis. In contrast, she describes the pickleball community as open and supportive.
“I just hope that me being out there and playing and being a top player can kind of show other people of color that they can come out and do it, and [demonstrate] just how great of a sport pickleball is,” said Tyra Black. “And I just hope it can help open doors for other players.”
Her commitment to the game shows in her daily schedule. Black trains one to three times a day for up to five hours total. She also works on drills and practices Pilates to stay fit. She represents Advil as a brand ambassador.
Inspired by Champions
Hurricane Tyra Black looks up to stars like Serena Williams and Naomi Osaka, not just for their achievements in tennis but for their influence off the court.
“I just think they’re both such amazing role models,” said Tyra Black. “I also love their fashion sense on the court and they really show that you can do it all, especially showing that you can be a mom and still be out there and kicking butt.”
Fashion also plays a part in Black’s confidence on the court. She enjoys wearing brands like Alo Yoga, Lululemon, and Wilson during matches.
“I try and do my best with fashion on the court, so hopefully they can see that too,” said Tyra Black. “I think it just brings me a little bit more confidence. When I look good out there, I feel good out there, too.”
Role Model for a New Generation
Tyra Black is not only winning on the court but also inspiring new players to join the sport. Her presence and passion are helping to open doors for others and bring more diversity to pickleball.
As her career continues to rise, she remains focused on spreading positivity and showing that anyone can succeed with hard work, support, and belief in themselves.
