Tyson McGuffin ATP Shot Drill: Professional pickleball player Tyson McGuffin recently shared his tips on mastering the ATP (Around the Post) shot using the Erne Pickleball Machine. Filmed at the Erne Pickleball headquarters, the session focused on precision, timing, and technique to help players improve this advanced shot.
Drilling the ATP with Accuracy
Tyson McGuffin used the Erne Pickleball Machine because it feeds balls to the same spot each time. This helped him stay consistent and train in a game-like setting.
“One thing that we’re going to be working on today is working on the ATP,” said Tyson McGuffin. “Something I love to do is do a drill with the Ernie pickle ball machine and work on my ATPs.”
He explained that many players make mistakes by hitting the ATP too early. Instead, he said, players should wait until the ball gets lower and further outside the sideline before swinging.
Key Techniques for the ATP
Tyson McGuffin shared that the ATP is all about patience and control. “Main focus is pushing out, letting it get low, taking your sweet time,” he said. “I would say there’s a big tendency with people getting overly excited to hit the ATP and they try to over hit it.”
He advised players to keep their technique “short and sweet” without trying to add too much power. The goal is to redirect the ball and land it safely on the other side.

Body Position and Shot Contact
For the right body position, Tyson McGuffin told players to keep their hips open and their stance wide. He said, “Keep your belly button facing at your target. Elbows nice and tucked in.”
He added that players should imagine a clock on the ball. “Let’s say the top is noon, the bottom is 6. So I’m going to be making contact at 3:00… I’m kind of kissing the outside edge.”
Tyson McGuffin described this technique as “giving the outside edge a little soft tissue massage,” emphasizing the need for a gentle and accurate strike.
Why Drilling the ATP Matters
The ATP is a powerful weapon when used correctly. But without proper practice, it can easily go wrong. Tyson McGuffin’s drill with the Erne Pickleball Machine helps players learn where and how to hit the ball under pressure.
He stressed the importance of using tools like ball machines to build confidence and muscle memory through repetition.
