Jack Munro grew up playing several sports. At age 10, an arm injury during baseball led him to try pickleball. “There’s a plethora of reasons why I play pickleball now, but the first one’s just like sheer luck,” said Jack Munro. He discovered the game by chance and never looked back.
Munro kept playing pickleball from ages 10 to 12, traveling to early events before the pro tours existed. After taking a break, he returned to the sport in his late teens. “Now there were tours, there were pros, there were different paddles,” he recalled. Around age 19 or 20, Munro started competing as a professional player and has since built a name for himself on and off the court.
Support from the APP and Family
Munro credits the APP with launching his competitive career. His first tournament was an APP NextGen event in San Antonio three years ago. “I played that tournament like with a friend. Had no expectations. Didn’t know what to expect,” Munro explained. That match helped him gain exposure and connect with other players.
The APP NextGen series, designed for younger athletes, made Munro feel he could grow at his own pace. “It gave me a really good space to grow myself,” he said. He later joined the national team for two years and has since graduated from it. “I really love the pipeline that it’s built,” he added.
Munro also spoke about his biggest inspiration—his father. “He’s imprinted on me the most out of anyone and really pushing me to be the entrepreneur that I’ve wanted to be growing up,” he said. Munro shared memories of long conversations with his dad about business and life after long workdays. “I owe a lot to him,” he said.
A Meaningful Victory in Daytona Beach
One of Munro’s most emotional moments came at a tournament in Daytona Beach, Florida. He and his partner Fudge earned a gold medal, but the event meant more than just a win. “That one was a tough one that meant a lot to me,” he said.
During the tournament, Munro’s grandfather was in intensive care and could no longer speak. But he was able to watch the match on TV. “Even though he can’t speak, and even though he can’t like, you know, verbally tell me how proud he is of me, I’m going to put everything on the court,” Munro said.
He played through medical timeouts with a deeper purpose. “I knew that I was playing for something that was bigger than me,” he added. Less than a day after Munro’s win, his grandfather passed away. “I don’t view it in a sad manner. I view it like he was just—he’s looking down extremely proud,” he said.
