How Pickleball Sparked Ruston Kelly’s Bold New Sound—and a Surprising Love Story

Ruston Kelly Pickleball Inspiration: Singer-songwriter Ruston Kelly is releasing his new album, Pale Through the Window, on September 12. The album features brighter tones than his previous releases, inspired in part by a personal connection to pickleball. The sport played a role in both his music and his relationship with girlfriend Tia.

A Shift in Music and Life

Ruston Kelly, known for emotionally raw music about heartbreak, addiction, and self-acceptance, said his previous work left him feeling unmoored. After his 2023 album, The Weakness, and a solo acoustic tour, he searched for meaning. He experienced a “rapture of spirit” one night at the piano, which inspired a shift in his creative approach.

Meeting Tia, who shared a similar spiritual journey, also influenced him. Their first interaction involved playing pickleball. Kelly said, “When it came to our first time hanging out, she was like, ‘Do you play pickleball?’” Despite not being athletic, he embraced the activity, which made him feel physically good and emotionally fulfilled.

Pickleball Inspires New Songs

As Kelly wrote songs for Pale Through the Window, pickleball became a symbol of taking risks and embracing new experiences. “The underlying sentiment [in writing ‘Pickleball’] was I stepped into something I was unsure if I was going to be good at—but not just the activity itself. With her as well,” he said.

The album maintains Kelly’s signature guitar-driven alt-country style, sometimes called “Dirt Emo,” but with a lighter, more positive energy. He hosted a celebrity pickleball event in Nashville ahead of the album’s release, calling it a “capstone of starting this new era.”

Balancing Emotion and Positivity

Kelly emphasized that suffering is not required for creativity. “I’ve never subscribed to the trope that artists should have communion with their suffering,” he said. His concerts show fans connecting deeply with his music, illustrating his goal to make songs that are relatable while maintaining personal meaning.
