Fashionable Footwear Fuels Pickleball Injuries: Doctors Warn Style Choices Are Sideling Players

Pickleball Footwear Injury Risks: Pickleball injuries are increasing as players choose stylish shoes over safe ones, doctors warn. Across neighborhood courts and tournaments, many players are wearing running, basketball, or lifestyle sneakers to match their paddles instead of shoes made for court play. Experts say this trend is leading to serious injuries.

Fashion Over Safety on the Court

The New York Post reported that players are often so focused on color-coordinated outfits that they skip proper footwear. Improper shoes such as running shoes, basketball shoes, and casual sneakers like Converse or Nike Air Force 1s do not provide the side-to-side support needed for pickleball. These shoes are built for forward movement, not the quick lateral steps common in the game.

Dr. Michael Dakkak, an orthopedic surgeon from Palm Beach, Florida, shared a striking example. He treated a patient who cared more about matching her paddle to her shoes than wearing the right footwear.

“She felt she didn’t perform as well when those things didn’t match,”(Dr. Michael).

The player’s choice of “crazy footwear” caused a torn Achilles, requiring surgery, a long recovery, and months away from the sport.

Why Court Shoes Matter

Pickleball and tennis shoes are specifically designed for fast side movements and sudden stops. They offer strong ankle support and better grip, reducing the risk of falls and sprains. Dr. Michael Dakkak insisted that players wear proper court shoes, saying they provide better stability and greatly lower the chance of injury.

Players of all ages, especially beginners and younger athletes, often underestimate the sport’s physical demands. Because pickleball is sometimes viewed as an “easy sport for the elderly,” many think any old sneakers will do. This misconception is putting more players at risk.

Safe and Stylish Options

Experts recommend investing in shoes made for pickleball or tennis to stay safe and perform well. Good choices include K-Swiss court shoes for a firm, supportive fit, Sqairz pickleball shoes for lightweight flexibility, and Skechers court shoes for basic comfort and support. Today’s court shoes come in many styles and colors, so players can find pairs that match their outfits without sacrificing safety.

The Importance of Prevention

Wearing the wrong shoes can lead to serious injuries like sprains, falls, or even torn tendons. Proper footwear not only protects players but also helps them play better and move more confidently. With pickleball’s growing popularity, experts hope players will choose shoes that combine fashion with function to avoid becoming another injury statistic.

News in Brief: Pickleball Footwear Injury Risks

Pickleball injuries are rising as players wear stylish sneakers instead of proper court shoes. Dr. Michael Dakkak warned that unsafe footwear, like running or lifestyle shoes, increases the risk of serious injuries. Experts urge players to use court shoes that support quick side movements and protect against ankle and Achilles injuries.
