Emilia Schmidt On Pickleball Future: Technology Will Improve Pickleball

Emilia Schmidt On Pickleball Future: The world of racquet sports has witnessed a significant evolution with the emergence of pickleball, a game that’s rapidly gaining traction globally. The recent launch of the Pickleball World Rankings (PWR), the PWR World Series, and the PWR World Tour in Dubai has provided a substantial boost to the sport. Australia’s top player, Emilia Schmidt, shares her insights on the future of pickleball, its growth, and how technology is revolutionizing the game.

Emilia Schmidt’s Journey and Insights

Teenage sensation Emilia Schmidt transitioned from tennis to pickleball, driven by her newfound passion for the sport. She reflects on the ease with which tennis players can adapt to pickleball, emphasizing that success in pickleball often hinges on the skills honed in tennis. “In pickleball, if you have been a tennis player, your success in the former depends on how your game was in the latter: whether one has a big serve, or you are kind of a hustler to get back a lot of balls like how I was,” Schmidt explains. She notes the quicker pace of pickleball compared to tennis, highlighting how the smaller court size demands rapid reactions from players.

Technology’s Role in Pickleball’s Growth

Schmidt underscores the impact of technology in enhancing the game, particularly the advancements in paddle design. “A lot of college tennis players and the ones in ITF are coming into pickleball. But one year in pickleball is like 10 years in any other sport, given the rapid growth it has seen. The paddles are already getting quicker and it is tough to deal with them at times. Players across the world, and not just in USA, Australia, and Asia will definitely keep growing,” she says. The swift technological developments are not only improving player performance but also attracting a younger demographic to the sport.

Impact of PWR World Series Globally

The launch of the PWR World Series and World Tour marks a pivotal moment for pickleball, promising to unite players from diverse backgrounds. Schmidt is optimistic about its global impact, stating, “It’s going to be huge, having already had a huge impact. You have a lot of people behind, supporting it. It is going to be more united than some of the other tours we have seen in the past, which is going to be a great positive. It is going to bring a lot of players from everywhere together and it is going to be exciting.” The increased cohesion within the sport is expected to drive further growth and international participation.

Rule Innovations and Future Expectations

Despite its burgeoning popularity, pickleball is still refining its rules to enhance the gameplay experience. Schmidt highlights the importance of maintaining the “kitchen line” rule, which prevents players from volleying too close to the net, thereby extending rallies and making the sport more engaging for spectators. “Since the pickleball court is so small, if a player gets up to the net, he/she has endless possibilities, which makes it very tough. Having the kitchen line where you can’t go while volleying just makes the rallies longer and a lot more entertaining for people to watch and it needs to stay in the rulebook for sure,” she asserts.

Personal Goals and Aspirations

Looking ahead, Schmidt has set her sights on global dominance in pickleball. Her immediate goal is to ensure players are well-cared for during major events, emphasizing the importance of enjoyment and support. “I expect that the players are well taken care of. First and foremost, it needs to be ensured players are having a good time when they are coming over for these events. On an individual level, I became Australia No.1 pretty quickly and I knew I wanted to go global. My goal is to be top 10 in the world, and eventually the best in the world,” Schmidt reveals.

As pickleball continues its meteoric rise, driven by technological advancements and the enthusiasm of former tennis players, its future looks promising. The PWR initiatives and the commitment of players like Emilia Schmidt are set to propel the sport to new heights, uniting a global community of athletes and fans.
