The 65-year-old actress was struck by a pickleball while playing with her sisters, DeDee and Lori, along with some friends. The incident left her with a black eye, putting her in a tough spot regarding her scheduled public appearances. Despite the injury, Pfeiffer chose to proceed with her planned appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show.

A Delicate Decision

On the show, Pfeiffer addressed the mishap candidly, saying, “Have you seen my Instagram? I still have a black eye…” Reflecting on a previous cancellation due to a stye, Pfeiffer noted,

“The funny thing was the first time I was supposed to come on the show, I got a stye so I felt I can’t .. who knows what they are going to say about me so I cancelled… It was vanity… Last Thursday, I’m playing pickleball — the ball hits me in the eye. The first thing I thought, ‘I’m gonna have to cancel Drew again!’ I was playing with DeeDee and Lori and a couple of friends…”

A Close Call

Pfeiffer recounted the moment the pickleball struck her, revealing that it was Lori’s friend who was responsible for the accident. She shared, “It was [Lori’s friend] who hit me in the eye. He was horrified of course. He couldn’t speak to me, he couldn’t even look at me.” The actress humorously shared a photo of her black eye on Instagram, warning, “WARNING Pickleball-Stay out of the Kitchen!! Thank you, Less!” She reassured fans that the injury was “nothing serious. Thank God!” and added, “Life is sweetened with risk!”

Adjusting to Change

In her interview, Pfeiffer also discussed her transition to an “empty nester” as her children have grown up and left home. She introduced her new puppy, Dot, as a delightful distraction.

“I had forgotten how much work a puppy is. But she’s so worth it. She’s adorable and she’s very funny and she’s wicked smart.”- (Pfeiffer)
