Pickleball Lights Up at Annual Laie Days: The Laie community embraced the spirit of togetherness and celebration at the annual “Laie Days” event, with pickleball taking center stage this year. Chauncey Lilly Ako, a key organizer and community member, emphasized the core objective of the event: bringing residents together through engaging activities. The pickleball tournament, hosted at the Cannon Activities Center, was a highlight of the festivities.

Tournament Details

The tournament featured three competitive categories: mixed doubles, men’s doubles, and women’s doubles. “$50 gift cards to Pounders were awarded to the three winning teams,” Ako noted, adding a competitive edge to the community event.

Player Highlights

Martha Christensen, a former BYU-Hawaii academic advisor and alumnae, stood out with her impressive performance. “The opposing team hit this incredible cross-court shot, and I went up and did the backhand down the line,” Christensen recalled, highlighting her execution of the “around the pole” move.

Community Support

Betty Nikora, also a former BYUH academic advisor for the arts departments, attended to support her husband and son. She expressed gratitude towards the volunteers who made the pickleball tournament a success.
