Joyce Jones Keeps the Pickleball Spirit Alive Across Generations at 94 Years

Joyce Jones Keeps the Pickleball Spirit Alive: At 94 years old, Joyce Jones is not merely a participant in the world of pickleball; she is a living testament to the sport’s enduring appeal and spirit. Her journey, which began over four decades ago with one of the sport’s original creators, Joel Pritchard, continues to inspire and captivate. This story, highlighted by AARP in their Pickleball Stories series, is a compelling reminder that age is but a number when it comes to pursuing one’s passions.

A Storied Beginning

Joyce Jones’ introduction to pickleball is almost as legendary as the sport itself. “I met my husband roller skating,” Jones recalls, her voice tinged with nostalgia. “His parents ran a badminton group at their church, and not only did I not get a point, but I didn’t even get to serve the bird.” Her competitive spirit was evident even then. However, it was her chance meeting with Joel Pritchard, one of pickleball’s inventors, that would set her on a path that few could imagine.

Jones, along with her husband, learned the game from Pritchard himself at a time when the sport was just taking root. “This is where Joel Pritchard, the inventor, taught me to play pickleball,” Jones says, reflecting on the summer days spent on Bainbridge Island. The game’s humble beginnings, coupled with her early introduction, have cemented Jones as a key figure in the sport’s history.

A Legacy of Passion

The passion for pickleball runs deep in Jones’ family. Her son, Bruce Jones, who is 76 years old, marvels at his mother’s enduring zeal. “At 94 years old, for her to still be out there playing pickleball competitively is pretty amazing,” he notes. The admiration from those who encounter Joyce Jones is noticeable, as many ask Bruce if they can meet the woman who continues to defy expectations.

Jones’ perspective on the sport reveals much about its charm. “What I like about pickleball is that everyone you play with is friendly,” she explains. “It’s a sport that you can go out and have fun with. Some people like to be competitive, and others just want to play for the exercise and enjoy themselves.” This duality is competitive yet approachable and has contributed to the sport’s rapid growth and its appeal across generations.

The Joy of Pickleball

Jones’ enthusiasm for pickleball extends beyond just playing; it encompasses the community and friendships forged through the game. “I’ve met hundreds of new friends and I still do every tournament I go to,” she says. The sport has allowed her to maintain old friendships and form new ones, showing the social aspect of pickleball that many players cherish.

Whether playing for fun or competing in tournaments, Jones finds immense joy in the game. Her experience shows pickleball’s versatility and its capacity to bring people together, regardless of age.
