Novak Djokovic’s Unexpected Pickleball Debut: A New Chapter Before the US Open

Novak Djokovic’s Unexpected Pickleball Debut: Last month, Novak Djokovic made headlines with his vocal criticism of pickleball, a sport that has been rapidly gaining popularity. As the 24-time Grand Slam champion expressed concern over the impact of pickleball on tennis, his remarks during Wimbledon were clear—he saw the rise of this new sport as a potential threat. However, in a surprising turn of events, Djokovic is now set to try his hand at pickleball ahead of the US Open.

The Head NYC Mash-Up: A Star-Studded Event

Djokovic will be participating in The Head NYC Mash Up, a high-profile event taking place just before the hardcourt tournament. He will be joined by Italian tennis star Jannik Sinner and pro-pickleball player Callie Jo Smith. This event, which will be streamed live, marks Djokovic’s debut on the pickleball court. The competition is sponsored by Head, the racket brand Djokovic currently endorses.

A First-Time Experience on the Pickleball Court

This marks a significant moment as Djokovic, who has dominated the world of tennis, steps onto a pickleball court for the first time. The sport has been celebrated globally for its less complicated gameplay, leading to a surge in popularity that some, including Djokovic, find concerning. His participation in this event shows the sport’s growing influence and his willingness to explore it firsthand.

Djokovic’s Concerns About Tennis’ Future

During Wimbledon, Djokovic didn’t hold back his thoughts on pickleball’s rise. “In terms of innovation in our sport… other than Slams, we have to figure out how to attract a young audience,” Djokovic said. He emphasized the need for tennis to learn from other sports like Formula 1, which have successfully expanded their global reach and popularity.

Tennis is the king or queen of all the racquet sports, that’s true. But on a club level, tennis is endangered. If we don’t do something about it… paddle, pickleball in States, they’re going to convert all the tennis clubs into paddle and pickleball because it’s just more economical.” – (Djokovic)

Despite these concerns, Djokovic remains focused on his tennis career, recently claiming his maiden Olympic gold medal by defeating Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz in the final in Paris. His upcoming foray into pickleball, however, suggests an openness to engaging with the sport he once criticized.
