Lea Jansen Calls for Pickleball Rule Changes: In a recent Instagram post, professional pickleball player Lea Jansen sparked a discussion about potential rule changes, captioned “What rule change would I make? Let’s see how many people disagree with me on this.” Jansen, known for her candid opinions, outlined two specific rules she believes should be revised to improve the game.
Revisiting the Serve Rule
Jansen’s first suggestion addresses the serve rule, a topic of ongoing debate in the pickleball community.
“So there’s two rules I would change. The one that’s super been talked about is the serve rule. Even though I’ve adjusted to it, I just still think it’s kind of silly and people are weaponizing their serves still.” – (Jansen)
Jansen expressed her view that the current rules governing serves have led to players exploiting them in ways that detract from the sport’s flow and fairness.

Eliminating the Foot Fault Rule on Returns in Pickleball
Her second proposed change involves the foot fault rule on returns. Jansen argued that “we should get rid of the foot fault rule on the lobs. It’s a really natural move to just do a push off.” She further explained, “And I honestly have always just viewed it as unnecessary and a cheap point. And unless somebody’s like completely abusing it, it’s just a natural move.” Jansen emphasized that while the foot fault rule on overhead shots remains valid, eliminating it from other situations would make the game more fluid and less penalizing.
News in Brief: Lea Jansen Calls for Pickleball Rule Changes
Lea Jansen recently took to Instagram to propose changes to pickleball rules. In her post, she suggested revising the serve rule, arguing that it currently allows players to exploit serves unfairly. She also proposed eliminating the foot fault rule on returns, stating that it’s a natural part of the game and often results in unnecessary penalties.
Jansen’s suggestions aim to make pickleball play more intuitive and less restrictive, prompting a discussion among players about potential improvements to the sport.
