Deb Sarkisian’s Brave Battle with ALS: From Pickleball Pro to Advocate for a Cure

Deb Sarkisian’s Brave Battle with ALS: Deb Sarkisian, once a high-flying pickleball star in Florida, now faces an uphill battle against amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. At 54, after a successful career at Honeywell Aerospace and a passionate involvement in pickleball, Sarkisian was dealt a life-altering diagnosis in May 2022.

Sarkisian’s rise in pickleball was rapid and impressive. She quickly ascended to a 4.5 skill rating and became a certified pro-level trainer. Her contributions extended beyond the court as she served as president of an 800-member pickleball club. The sport brought her joy and a tight-knit community, with evenings often spent playing well into the night.

However, her vibrant life took a dramatic turn when she was diagnosed with ALS. The disease, which progressively deteriorates nerve cells and muscle function, is always terminal, though its progression varies widely. Sarkisian, who initially dismissed the severity of her symptoms, now finds her mobility severely restricted, relying on a wheelchair and in-home care for daily activities.

Despite the physical limitations imposed by ALS, Sarkisian maintains a remarkably positive outlook. She views her condition as a “gift” that has deepened her appreciation for life and the support network around her.

“It’s a progressive disease, and that’s the beauty of it. You have a chance to adjust daily.” – (Sarkisian)

In a testament to her enduring spirit, Sarkisian’s daughter, Kailey, is spearheading a sand volleyball tournament fundraiser at iBeach31 in Westfield. The event will commemorate the 10th anniversary of the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge and support ALS research and patient needs. The tournament is set for Saturday, and participants are encouraged to bring their ice buckets for an additional challenge.
