New Pickleball Courts at Mettowee Park: A Success Story in Granville

New Pickleball Courts at Mettowee Park: The new pickleball courts at Mettowee Park represent a significant milestone for Granville, marking one of the initial achievements of the Granville Recreational Economy for Rural Communities program. Granville was selected for this program last year, aimed at enhancing local recreational facilities and community engagement.

Funding and Construction

The project, which began in spring, was made possible through a substantial grant from the Granville Foundation and support from the Granville Lions Club. The official ribbon-cutting ceremony took place on Wednesday, August 28, though the courts had a soft opening on Thursday, August 8, in celebration of National Pickleball Day.

Community Effort

Village Trustee Denise Davies spearheaded the initiative from start to finish. Davies highlighted the collaborative effort involved, emphasizing the contributions from the village’s Department of Public Works. Superintendent Scott Mackey and employee Josh Hayes played pivotal roles in the successful completion of the project.

Pickleball: A Growing Popularity

Pickleball, a sport similar to tennis but played on a smaller court with paddles and a perforated plastic ball, has seen rising popularity, particularly among older adults. The smaller playing area and engaging nature of the game make it an attractive option for both fun and fitness.

Granville Mayor Paul Labas led the ribbon-cutting ceremony, joined by Village Clerk Rick Roberts, Granville Lions Club’s Phil Weaver, Trustee Denise Davies, DPW Superintendent Scott Mackey, and DPW employee John Hayes. The event marked the formal opening of the new courts, which are expected to enhance community recreational opportunities.
