Master the Transition Zone with Danea Zeigle’s Game-Changing Slinky Drill

Master the Transition Zone with Danea Zeigle’s Game: Pickleball content creator Danea Zeigle recently shared a valuable drill on Instagram, aimed at improving play in one of the trickiest areas of the court: the transition zone. Known as the “Slinky Drill,” Zeigle’s practice routine is designed to help players navigate this midcourt zone more efficiently, where many errors tend to occur.

The drill begins with both players standing at the non-volley zone line, with the feeder positioned at the kitchen, delivering three consecutive dinks to the player practicing. After each set of three successful shots, the player takes a step back, repeating the sequence from each spot until they reach the baseline. Zeigle emphasizes the importance of not moving to the next position until completing three consecutive shots without mistakes.

Once at the baseline, the player reverses course, moving forward through the same sequence until they return to the kitchen line, mimicking the movement of a slinky toy.

Zeigle highlights the drill’s ability to provide players with ample reps while teaching the nuances of different shot lengths and follow-through adjustments, depending on where they are on the court. To add variety and keep it engaging, she recommends incorporating speed-ups or attacking high balls during the drill.
