Jessie Irvine’s Path to a New Sport, Her Unexpected Leap

Jessie Irvine’s Path to a New Sport: Every athlete has a story. For Jessie Irvine, that story began long before she became known on the pickleball court. While many kids in her neighborhood were slipping on soccer cleats or running around in tutus, Irvine was strapping on tap shoes, a decision that would shape her early years.

“I started dancing when I was two or three years old. I did ballet, tap, jazz, all of it. I also did all of these dance competitions growing up and we traveled around. We won a ton of medals at these competitions.” – (irvine)

But beneath the glitter of stage lights and the applause of the audience, dance wasn’t where her heart truly lay. It was simply an activity that came naturally.

A Dream Deferred

Though Irvine enjoyed her dance journey, her heart pulsed for something else—tennis and, later, pickleball. However, that doesn’t mean she didn’t dream big.

“My favorite out of all of them was tap dance. When I was little, it was my dream to be in Riverdance.” – (irvine)

As a child, Irvine admired the dynamic performers of Riverdance, their feet flying across the stage with a grace she aspired to match. However, at the tender age of 10, reality struck hard. In that moment, the young dancer faced a harsh truth.

“Our dance teachers went around the room and asked all of us individually what our goals and dreams were. When they got to me, I said I wanted to be on Riverdance. My teacher wasn’t mean about it, but she was very realistic when she told me that joining Riverdance wasn’t going to be possible.” – (irvine)

Turning Points

It was a moment of clarity that led her to make a bold decision.

“I literally walked out of the room. I quit right then and there. I was only dancing because I wanted to be on Riverdance, and if you’re telling me I can’t do that, then it’s time for me to move on and find something else to do.” – (irvine)

While that moment was undoubtedly tough, it became a turning point in her life.

“Riverdance is an Irish cultural dance. They’re very proud of that and protective of their culture, so it was hard for me being a mixed African American black female to get into it. It was also the 90s and things were different back then. Looking back, I completely understand. It’s a cultural dance, but when I was young, I looked up to the performers and thought it looked like so much fun. But, I started playing tennis after that and I never looked back at dance.” – (irvine)

Finding a New Rhythm

What she lost in the world of dance, she found on the tennis court. In an unexpected twist, her dancing background equipped her with a discipline that has been crucial in her athletic career.

“Competitive dance made me love reps and understand why they’re so good for you. People tend to get bored with doing the same thing over and over, but practicing dance again and again helped develop that discipline and respect for it that I use now for drills.” – (irvine)

With a dance background influencing her athletic performance, one might notice how it shows in her playful signature hairstyle—those space buns are a nod to her early days as a ballerina, a reminder that each step taken in her past has led her to where she is today.
