Lima Hosts Pickleball World Cup: The recent Pickleball World Cup in Lima, Peru, brought together over 500 players from 40 countries, making it a truly international event. Announced in March of this year, this second edition followed the success of a special edition last year, indicating the growing popularity of pickleball around the globe. The pickleball tournament took place over two thrilling days, October 26 and 27, and showed not only the competitive spirit of the players but also the vibrant atmosphere in Lima.
One highlight of the tournament was the participation of Team Puerto Rico, who ultimately emerged as the champions. Their journey to victory was marked by skillful play and teamwork, resulting in an exciting final match.
The tournament also gained significance this year with the involvement of DUPR, the rating system widely used by pickleball clubs. This partnership ensured that players could earn official rankings through their performances at the Pickleball World Cup, adding prestige to the event.
Adding to the excitement was the tournament mascot, Lume, inspired by Peru’s Cock of the Rock, symbolizing unity and passion. The use of high-quality court materials provided by the official court sponsor, Pickleball Court United, and the balls supplied by Franklin Sports, ensured that players experienced top-notch conditions throughout the tournament.
Team Highlights: Success and Challenges
Team Puerto Rico’s win was a significant achievement, but it was not the only story from the tournament. The Indian teams, which were invited to compete by the Indian Pickleball Association, faced a tough challenge in Group C, alongside Puerto Rico, Colombia, and the Dominican Republic. Despite their best efforts, India was unable to advance past the group stage, finishing with a bittersweet performance.

In their final match against Puerto Rico, India showed their talent, ending the match 2-all. However, in the subsequent tiebreaker, they lost 8-15, marking their exit from the tournament.
Earlier, they faced Colombia, drawing 2-all but falling short in the tiebreaker with a score of 14-16. Their only victory came against the Dominican Republic, where they secured a 4-0 win, but it was not enough to propel them into the Round of 16.
The competition level was incredibly high, and while the Indian teams did not advance, their participation was a valuable experience on the international stage. This exposure is essential for the growth of pickleball in India and will help to develop future talent.
Embracing All Ages: The Senior Tournament
The Pickleball World Cup also embraced players of all ages, featuring a special category for seniors aged 50 and above. This inclusive approach highlights pickleball’s appeal as a sport for everyone, regardless of age. The senior tournament saw impressive performances, with Kiran Salian winning a silver medal in the men’s 50-plus singles 4.0 category, while Nozer Amalsadiwala secured a bronze in the same event.
Additionally, the duo of Salian and Amalsadiwala teamed up to win gold in the men’s doubles 50-plus 4.0 category, showing their skills and teamwork. This emphasis on senior participation not only fosters community among older players but also shows that pickleball is a sport that can be enjoyed throughout one’s life.
