National Collegiate Pickleball Association Thrives with Record Participation

The National Collegiate Pickleball Association (NCPA) is rapidly shaping the landscape of collegiate sports, bringing pickleball to the forefront of university athletics. Despite facing a trademark dispute with the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), which alleged name similarities and unfair competition, the NCPA and its CEO, Noah Suemnick, remain undeterred in their mission to promote collegiate pickleball nationwide.

Legal Challenges and Mission Continuity

Last year, the NCAA filed a lawsuit against the NCPA, arguing that the similarity between the two organizations’ names created confusion and diluted the NCAA’s trademark. However, the legal battle hasn’t slowed the NCPA’s momentum.

  • In March 2024, the NCPA hosted one of the largest collegiate pickleball tournaments ever in San Diego, where 38 schools competed for a $25,000 prize pool at the National Championship.

Suemnick remains optimistic about the future of college pickleball, stating,

“This is just the beginning with the growth for college pickleball. I can see 400+ universities with an organized club program.” – (Suemnick)

NCPA’s Expansion and National Reach

Founded in January 2023 by Suemnick, the NCPA aims to provide collegiate players with the opportunity to show their skills and compete at a high level. Since its first event in San Diego, the organization has expanded its reach, hosting tournaments in every region of the United States.

The NCPA now joins the ranks of other major organizations, like DUPR and APP, in hosting national collegiate tournaments. However, Suemnick believes their distinct focus on collegiate pickleball sets them apart.

“Our biggest advantage is the fact that we are solely focused on college pickleball. That’s allowed us to get so close to perfecting the NCPA in such a short amount of time.” – (Suemnick)

In preparation for the 2025 National Championship in Las Vegas, the NCPA is organizing five regional tournaments across the nation. These events are crucial qualifying opportunities, with the top eight schools from each regional securing bids to nationals.

The NCPA’s recent regional tournament in San Diego was a landmark event, attracting participation from 30 universities, over 250 players, and an audience of 1,500 spectators. The tournament proved to be a massive success, reinforcing the growing enthusiasm for collegiate pickleball.

The Growing Appeal of College Pickleball

“The energy is different in college and that’s why the college space is growing at such a rapid pace. The Rivalry of universities adds something to the game.” – (Suemnick)

The rivalry between universities adds intensity to the game, creating a unique atmosphere that drives the sport’s rapid growth across campuses nationwide.

The Future of Collegiate Pickleball

As more universities embrace pickleball, opportunities for college athletes continue to expand. The competitive nature of the sport, combined with its growing presence in collegiate athletics, has led to a surge in interest, turning what once was a casual recreational activity into a competitive staple in intercollegiate sports.
