Serving for Safety Pickleball Event Starts July 11 in Nitro

Serving for Safety Pickleball Event: The Second Annual 2024 Serving for Safety Pickleball Tournament, sponsored by Ohio Valley Bank. Set against the backdrop of the expansive Nitro Sports Complex—the largest pickleball facility in West Virginia—this tournament promises to be a marquee event in the pickleball calendar.

From July 11th through the 14th, players and fans will gather at this state-of-the-art facility, which boasts 17 outdoor courts (9 dedicated and 8 dual-purpose), a pool, a concession stand, and various vantage points to catch all the action. This MMP-sanctioned tournament ensures top-notch officiating, with referees assigned to all medal matches and as many other matches as possible.

Tournament Schedule and Structure

The event kicks off on Thursday with Senior Women’s and Men’s Doubles. Friday features Senior Mixed Doubles, Senior Singles, Men’s Singles, and Women’s Singles. The weekend continues with Women’s and Men’s Doubles on Saturday, peaking in Mixed Doubles and Pro Singles on Sunday.

To add to the excitement, there’s an open event with a guaranteed purse of $15,000. However, divisions need at least six teams to ensure a full payout. Players must register and pay as individuals, and all registrations are to be completed online via credit or debit card. The first 250 participants to register will receive a swag bag, and those who register by July 1st will get a free tournament t-shirt and towel.

Practice Sessions and Community Night

Participants are invited to practice sessions on Thursday, July 11th, and Friday, July 12th, from 3-6 pm. Additionally, Friday night will host a community night from 5 to 8:30 pm, featuring free swimming, free pickleball courts, free pickleball lessons, and live music from Scott Honaker. The highlight of the evening will be the Mt. Olive pickle eating contest at 6:00 pm, with a $100 prize for the winner.

Competitive Format and Prizes

All teams and players will play a minimum of four to six games, with round robins consisting of four to six teams or players. The top four teams will advance to the playoffs. Scoring during the round-robin will be one game to 15 points, with a win by two. Medal matches will be best of three games to 11 points, again with a win by two.

To add to the appeal, the Metro 911 Employee Association will give away 13 Selkirk paddles, four Selkirk Core Day backpacks, and more. Winners do not need to be present to claim their prizes but must be pre-registered for the tournament.
