Why Pickleball Courts Are Taking Over Australia’s Retirement Villages—And What It Means for Seniors

Retirement Villages Pickleball Courts: Retirement villages and lifestyle resorts across Australia are adding pickleball courts to help older adults stay active and social. The sport is now part of new housing projects in Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia, and Tasmania, giving residents a fun and easy way to exercise.

Pickleball Gains Ground in Queensland

Living Gems Rockhampton in Queensland will offer pickleball courts as part of its 27-hectare over-50s community. Other sports at the site will include a golf simulator, bowling alley, tennis, and yoga spaces.

GemLife Elimbah, a land lease community in Moreton Bay, will also have tennis and pickleball courts. It will include 404 homes and several resort-style features, such as indoor and outdoor pools, a wellness room, and bowling lanes.

Vantage Hervey Bay, by AVID Property Group, has started welcoming residents and will add pickleball courts, along with a clubhouse, gym, pool, and yoga lawn.

New South Wales Adds Court to New Resort

In New South Wales, Ingenia Lifestyle Kokomo is being built at Blueys Beach and will include a pickleball court. The resort will also offer a pool, spa, gym, sauna, and indoor golf simulator. The first homeowners are expected by the end of 2025.

Victoria’s Communities Join the Trend

Lincoln Lifestyle Eagle Point in East Gippsland will feature a pickleball court when it opens in late 2026. The estate will also include a wellness centre, library, cinema, and alfresco dining area.

Springtree Yarrawonga, located on the Victoria–New South Wales border, will include pickleball courts as part of a larger lifestyle community with a clubhouse, pool, and gym. Project manager Jason Stewart said, “It still has that true country charm, but with everything you need close by, from the lake to the shops, pubs, and clubs. It’s a beautiful place to live comfortably.”

Pickleball in Other States

In South Australia, Living Choice Flagstaff Hill is the first fully-integrated retirement and golf community in the state. It offers wellness rooms, a gym, cinema, and other fitness spaces, including pickleball courts.

Western Australia has launched Halcyon Illyarrie in Sinagra. This over-55s land lease community includes pickleball courts, a heated pool, spa, and clubhouse with a dance floor and dining areas.

In Tasmania, a new resort in New Norfolk, managed by Noble Life, is under construction. Once complete, it will include a pickleball court and a wellness centre with an indoor pool, sauna, gym, and therapy rooms.

Why This Matters

The rise of pickleball courts in retirement villages shows how developers are focusing on health, fitness, and social life for older adults. These courts offer a low-impact way to stay active while also building community connections. As more villages add courts, pickleball could become a regular part of retirement living.
