Echuca Moama Pickleball Club Launch: Echuca-Moama now has an official pickleball club. The Echuca Moama Pickleball Club was formed in May 2025 and began running sessions in July at the Echuca Basketball Stadium within the Echuca South Recreation Reserve. The club aims to grow the sport and include players of all ages and skill levels.
Club Formation and Goals
The club was created by a group of dedicated players who had previously participated in one-off sessions. Vice-President Trish Black explained,
“Everyone was happy playing socially, but there were people as well who wanted to play competition, and we wanted to involve kids and all age groups. We felt that the way to achieve that was to have our own club.”
Trish Black added,
“We also wanted to make sure that we had a club within our own region, specific to Echuca-Moama, so that was the impetus behind that.”
The club is now affiliated with Pickleball Victoria.
Sessions and Facilities
The club currently runs two weekly sessions: Thursdays from 10.30am to noon and Fridays from 6pm to 7.30pm. Additional sessions will start soon on Monday mornings and Tuesday evenings. Club President Doug Black said,
“(Some) people prefer to come out during the day session and so we want two sessions a week for that. (We’ll also have) two sessions a week for competitors in the evenings where you can really go hard.”
Members also secured public access courts at Echuca East Recreation Reserve and at the Moama Football Netball Club netball courts for casual or practice sessions.
Community and Youth Involvement
The club plans to run school holiday programs and introduce children to the sport. Trish Black said,
“We really want to do it for the whole community, we don’t want this perception that it’s just for retirees or elderly people. It’s for everybody, kids all the way through, so that’s what our aim is with our coach.”
A Level 2 coach is available to help new members. The club also has plans for grant applications and tournaments in the future.
Pickleball Popularity and Rules
Pickleball is a fast-growing sport in Australia, with registered club membership rising over 63 percent in the year to May 1, 2025. The game uses a hard plastic perforated ball, similar to a wiffle ball, and is played on a 13m x 6m court, the same size as a doubles badminton court.
All equipment is provided during sessions. Members pay $7.50 per session with a $50 affiliation fee, while non-members can join four sessions at $12 each before needing to register.
