Pickleball and U SPORTS: Can Canada’s Governing Body Keep Up with Pickleball’s Growth

Pickleball and U SPORTS: U SPORTS has not added a new sport in nearly 20 years, despite the rapid growth of pickleball in North America. Recognized as the fastest-growing sport by the Sports and Fitness Industry Association, pickleball combines elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis, appealing to players of all ages and skill levels.

Intramural Programs and Growing Interest

Queen’s University recently introduced pickleball as an intramural program, aligning with the trend at many universities across Canada.

This growth in popularity coincides with the increasing visibility of professional leagues, such as the Professional Pickleball Association, which has seen more televised events and competitions.

A Call for U SPORTS to Adapt

The last sport sanctioned by U SPORTS was curling in 2008. In contrast, the NCAA has expanded its list of sanctioned sports significantly, recently adding beach volleyball and planning to include women’s wrestling. While the NCAA has not yet adopted pickleball, American colleges are organizing national championships, enhancing the sport’s profile.

To remain competitive, Canadian universities should consider adopting pickleball as a varsity sport. Its versatility allows for play indoors and outdoors, making it easier to implement. For students at Queen’s unable to join the intramural program, the Kingston Pickleball Club offers court rentals nearby.

The ongoing popularity of pickleball presents a unique opportunity for U SPORTS and Canadian universities to attract student-athletes. Embracing this sport could elevate U SPORTS within the North American sports development landscape.
