Vernon Pickleball Association Parking Lot to Receive New Lighting Upgrades

The parking lot at the Vernon Pickleball Association (VPA) will receive upgrades, including new lighting to improve visibility and safety. The Vernon City Council has approved the installation of lights on the south outside wall of the Vernon Toyota Indoor Sports Centre. These lights will illuminate the pathway leading from the parking lot to the Pickleball Complex.

Lighting Improvements for Safer Access

The decision to enhance lighting follows concerns about visibility and safety for players and visitors. The new lights will provide better illumination for those walking to and from the facility, especially in the evening hours. The installation will take place on the south side of the indoor soccer facility, where the pathway to the complex is located.

Discussion on Paving Costs

Coun. Akbal Mund inquired about the cost of paving a gravel parking lot near the Pickleball Complex. James Rice, manager of public works, estimated the cost at $583,000 for that lot alone.

Currently, the VPA has three gravel parking areas, which have been identified in the Parks Asset Management Plan but are not included in the city’s Five Year Rolling Infrastructure Plan.

Future Considerations

While the lighting upgrades have been approved, the paving of all three gravel lots remains uncertain. The VPA board acknowledges the need for improvements but recognizes that paving is not yet part of the city’s long-term infrastructure plans.

The upgrades aim to enhance accessibility and safety for players and visitors, with future decisions on paving dependent on funding and city planning priorities.
