Exploring New Uses

As the city prepares for the completion of a new twin-pad arena at Omischl Sports Complex, expected to open in August 2026, attention has turned to the future of West Ferris Arena. While the facility is aging, officials believe it still has potential for alternative uses.

“As an arena, it’s pretty long in the tooth, but there are other options, whether it’s a community centre within West Ferris, pickleball courts, it is sort of an unpainted canvas right now.” – (Peter Chirico)

The mayor emphasized that the final decision should reflect community needs.

Facility Condition and Community Input

According to past engineering reports, the arena’s roof over the rink remains in good condition, though sections above the dressing rooms require maintenance. The city has been ensuring the snow load is kept clear to prevent further issues.

Chirico noted that the building’s central location makes it an ideal site for community activities. “It’s right in the heart of West Ferris,” he said, highlighting the programs and services already utilizing the upstairs hall.

As discussions continue, residents will have a chance to voice their opinions on how to best repurpose the space. While no final decision has been made, the potential for pickleball courts remains on the table as the city looks for ways to maximize the facility’s usefulness.

“It has to be a community decision in what goes into that. Losing a building of that caliber if we can extend the life five or 10 years, let’s make sure we can utilize it in the best possible way.” – (Peter Chirico)
