Pickleball Club of Grey Highlands Gains Council Approval for Sponsorship Drive

The Grey Highlands Council has approved a plan allowing the Pickleball Club of Grey Highlands to explore sponsorships, naming rights, and advertising to help fund new pickleball courts in Flesherton. However, Deputy Mayor Dane Nielsen has expressed concerns that the town is rushing into the project without fully understanding its long-term financial impact.

Council Approves Fundraising Efforts

At the March 5 council meeting, members voted 6-1 in favor of an agreement that permits the pickleball club to seek donations and sponsorship deals. The municipality will also apply for funding through the Community Sport and Recreation Infrastructure Fund to support the project.

The club is working to raise $100,000 in donations, with sponsorships and naming rights expected to generate additional revenue.

Concerns Over Long-Term Costs

Deputy Mayor Dane Nielsen, the lone opposing vote, warned against moving forward without knowing the future financial burden on taxpayers.

“We’re not taking in the whole context of the decision,” said Nielsen, questioning whether the town could properly maintain new facilities given existing challenges with parks and recreation equipment.

“It feels like we’re having a hard time taking care of the parks and recreation equipment we have and here we are saying: let’s add something new.” – (Nielsen)

Other Council Members Support the Plan

Other councillors pushed back, arguing that the fundraising process should not be delayed while awaiting a financial report.

“This will allow the fundraising while we get the capital report,” said Coun. Paul Allen, noting that the club’s fundraising efforts would take time.

“These funds are not going to be raised in a week or two or a month or two.” – (Allen)

“We’ll get that (capital) report well in advance of their fundraising goals. I don’t think we want to hold up that effort.” – (Coun. Tom Allwood)

What’s Next?

With council’s approval, the pickleball club can now seek sponsorships, while officials work on evaluating long-term costs. If funding applications are successful, construction on the new Flesherton pickleball courts could move forward in the near future.
