ONIX Spring Slam Brings High-Stakes Pickleball Action to Belleville This Spring

The Quinte Pickleball Association (QPA) is set to host its first-ever ONIX Spring Slam from May 30 to June 1, 2025. The event will take place at the newly developed outdoor pickleball courts in Belleville, Ontario. This fundraising tournament aims to support the Belleville General Hospital Foundation and Gleaners Food Bank.

The tournament will feature multiple categories, including men’s, women’s, and mixed doubles across various age and skill levels. The competition will conclude with a ‘Grand Finale Match,’ where the winning team in the Co-Ed Open 4.5+ division will receive $250 VISA gift cards. The event will follow a round-robin format leading into a single-elimination medal round.

Tournament Details and Format

The three-day event will be held at Clifford ‘Sonny’ Belch Park (Hillcrest Park), with play occurring from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily. Participants will compete using the ONIX Durafast 40 outdoor pickleball.

  • Friday, May 30: Men’s and Women’s Doubles (65+, <3.0 and 3.5-4.0), Mixed Doubles (3.5-4.0, <49), and Co-Ed Doubles (3.0 and under, <49).
  • Saturday, May 31: Mixed Doubles (3.0, 65+), Men’s and Women’s Doubles (50-64, 3.0 and 3.5-4.0), and Men’s and Women’s Doubles (3.5-4.0, <49).
  • Sunday, June 1: Mixed Doubles (3.5-4.0, 65+), Mixed Doubles (3.0 and 3.5-4.0, 50-64), and the Co-Ed Open 4.5+ ‘Grand Finale Match.’

Each participant is guaranteed at least three matches. Matches will have a five-minute warm-up before the first game and two-minute breaks between subsequent games. Medal matches will be refereed whenever possible.

Registration and Fees

Registration opened on March 19, 2025, and will close on May 23, 2025. Early registration costs CAD 70, increasing to CAD 75 on April 1. Each additional event costs CAD 20. Players must register and pay through pickleballbrackets.com to secure their spots.

Tournament organizers reserve the right to combine or adjust brackets as needed. Participants may register for a higher skill level or a younger age group. The event will follow official pickleball rules, though it is awaiting final sanctioning from Pickleball Canada.

Community Impact and Amenities

Proceeds from the ONIX Spring Slam will benefit the Belleville General Hospital Foundation and Gleaners Food Bank. Organizers expect a strong turnout and a competitive yet friendly atmosphere.

The venue includes four fully lit outdoor courts, restrooms, a water fountain, and a food truck. Free parking is available on nearby streets.

Tournament directors Mitch Brown and Paolo Giuliani, both CPR and ACLS certified, will oversee the event. They encourage players to stay hydrated and prepare for outdoor conditions.

This tournament marks a significant milestone for the Quinte Pickleball Association, bringing high-level competition to Belleville while supporting vital community initiatives.
