New Pickleball Courts Open in Pickering, Sparking Community Excitement

Pickleball Courts Open in Pickering: Pickleplex Social Club has opened a new pickleball facility in Pickering, offering more opportunities to play the fast-growing sport. The club, located at the Shops at Pickering City Centre, features six full-sized courts and a singles court. It is the second Pickleplex location in Canada, with a third opening soon in Windsor.

Expanding Pickleball Access in Pickering

The new facility aims to meet the growing demand for pickleball in the community. “We’re filling a need in the marketplace,” said Pickleplex co-founder, president, and CEO Steven Fry.

Pickering was chosen because of its active pickleball community but limited court availability. “For us, Pickering was an awesome opportunity,” Fry said.

A Sport for All Ages

Pickleball, often described as a mix of ping-pong and badminton, is easy to learn but challenging to master. Fry, a former squash player, has become a passionate advocate for the sport.

“I can play with my parents, I can play with my kids,” he said, emphasizing its appeal to all age groups. Despite the common belief that pickleball is mainly for seniors, Fry said its popularity is growing among younger players. “I use the saying ‘eight to 88,’” he added.

“In fact it’s much younger than that. But it’s for everybody.” – (fry)

Membership and Community Engagement

Pickleplex is open daily from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. It offers memberships with exclusive benefits, including advance bookings. Non-members can also access open play sessions, lessons, and event bookings.

Fry highlighted the social aspect of the sport, noting that pickleball is not just about fitness but also about bringing people together. “More important, it’s getting the community together, socializing,” he said.

The Future of Pickleplex

With locations in Barrie and Pickering and a third set to open in Windsor, Pickleplex continues to expand across Canada. “We’ve been on a mission to really grow this sport across the country,” Fry said.

As pickleball’s popularity rises, more facilities like Pickleplex are expected to open, providing players of all skill levels with more opportunities to play and connect.
