25,000 Dollar Grant Fuels New Pickleball Court at Woodlawn Park

Pickleball Court at Woodlawn Park: Fresh Air Fitness has received $25,000 in funding to build a new pickleball court at the outdoor gym site in Woodlawn Regional Park. The donation, made on April 9, comes from Kingston Midstream and Tundra Oil & Gas through the Richardson Foundation and will fully fund the project.

Each company gave $12,500 toward the court. Fresh Air Fitness co-founder Debby Knight said the amount will cover the total cost. The court will be built near the Cossette Park baseball diamond and is expected to open within a couple of months.

Planning for Summer Play

Knight said they have already contacted contractors and are working on the next steps to begin construction.

We’ve already contacted the contractors to work out some of the details and get going on it, and have people playing pickleball this summer.” – (Knight)

The project will add a new feature to Woodlawn Regional Park, which is already home to Fresh Air Fitness’s outdoor gym. The new court will serve both local players and park visitors.

A Sport in High Demand

Pickleball is quickly growing in Estevan, according to Knight. She said there is a local pickleball association and a strong interest in the sport.

“Pickleball is a very ‘up-and-coming sport’ in Estevan. I have a young friend of mine who plays tennis, and she said it’s a little problematic to get the tennis courts because they’re always playing pickleball on them. There is a shortage of courts.” – (Knight)

The Fresh Air Fitness team also plans to build a disc golf course in the park to further expand recreational options.

Community and Corporate Support

Brenda Orr from Tundra Oil & Gas said the court will benefit many people in the community, including staff who live nearby.

“It works for everybody in the community, but it also supports our staff in the area as well,” said Orr, who pointed out it’s a growing sport that she has started playing. She praised the volunteers who helped move the project forward.

Looking Ahead

With funding in place and planning underway, the court is expected to open in time for summer play. It will help meet the growing demand for more pickleball facilities in Estevan and give residents a new way to stay active outdoors.
