Coquitlam’s New Pickleball League Offers Fun and Connection for All Ages

Pickleball League Coquitlam: Elevation Athletics has launched its first pickleball league in Coquitlam. The nonprofit’s goal is to offer an eight-week league that gives adults a fun and active way to connect outside of work and home. A new doubles league starts May 5 at Glen Elementary for players 18 and older.

A Space to Play and Connect

Elevation Athletics (EA) wants to create a “third space” — a place beyond home or work where people can socialize. Jarred Reid, a West Coast leader with EA, said the sport’s wide appeal inspired the program.

“It’s an up and coming, growing sport that a lot of individuals across many different ages and demographics are having a ton of fun playing. So we’re excited to get some good pickleball programming here available in BC.” – (Reid)

How the League Works

The first league is already full, but the new doubles league will run from May 5 to June 11. Players can register solo or with a partner. EA sets up nets at Glen Elementary, but players bring their own paddles.

Each week, players will team up with new partners and earn points. Rankings shift depending on how well players perform. While full lessons aren’t offered, EA has coordinators on-site to help new players get started.

“What we’re just trying to offer is pickleball availability to everyone, despite your experience level, if you’re interested in playing the sport and picking up something new, it’s definitely a great thing to try.” – (Reid)

Why Pickleball is Growing Fast

Pickleball has gained popularity across Canada. One survey found about 1.54 million people now play the sport. While it was once seen as a game for seniors, the biggest increase is now among people aged 35 to 54.

“Pickleball is an easy sport to pick up,” Reid said. He also said the sport creates strong social bonds.

“And it builds quickly, where once people go and play a few times, they’re really having a good time, and they’re eager to get back out and play with new friends, make make new teammates.” – (Reid)

Coquitlam currently has 15 public pickleball courts, according to the Global Pickleball Network. Other local pickleball groups include Pocomo.
