Free pickleball sessions are back in Fort St. John for the third year. The Peace Country Pickleball Association (PCPA) is offering free drop-in sessions every Tuesday evening during May and June at the Kin Park pickleball courts. The sessions run from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., and no registration is required.
These free events are meant to introduce more people to the game. They are open to all, and paddles and balls are provided. The PCPA has three certified coaches at each session to help new players learn the basics and enjoy the sport.
Pickleball for All Ages
Pickleball is similar to tennis but is played on a smaller court with paddles and a harder ball. It is usually played in doubles and is growing in popularity across Canada. “It’s a great sport,” said Ted Euchner, past president of the Peace Country Pickleball Association.
“It keeps people active. It’s something that people of all ages can do and keeps them off the couch.” – (Euchner)
The Kin Park courts opened in 2023, and the PCPA has been holding free sessions there since then. The group will look at how many people attend this year before deciding whether to continue them later in the summer.
Getting Started Is Easy
Everyone is welcome to join, no matter their skill level. The PCPA provides all equipment needed to play. Attendees are asked to wear court shoes, such as those used for badminton or basketball. Running shoes, Crocs, and flip flops are not allowed for safety reasons. Protective eyewear is recommended, though not required.
“We just want [to introduce] various people to the sport, give them the basics so that they can carry on a rally, and if they want to get more serious about it, then they can come out to our club events and go from there.” – (Euchner)
Inspiring Community Involvement
Ted Euchner started playing pickleball after joining a free session by the BC Seniors Games Society in 2019. He has since taken part in the PCPA, serving as vice president and president.
Last month, the Peace Country Pickleball Association held clinics in Taylor for current members. These free Tuesday sessions in Fort St. John are the group’s latest effort to promote the game and invite new players to try it out.
Why It Matters
The PCPA wants to grow the pickleball community in the Peace Region. These free sessions make it easier for people to try the sport without needing gear or experience. If attendance remains strong, the sessions may continue beyond June, helping more people stay active and connected.
