Pickleball players in Port Alberni are offering to pay for new court improvements at Gyro Park. The plan is to repaint the five tennis courts to create six pickleball courts and three tennis courts. The project would be fully funded by the PA Picklers pickleball club.
The club is asking the city council for approval to move forward. The changes are expected to cost around $150,000. Money would come from local fundraising efforts and possible BC Gaming grants.
Growing Interest in Pickleball
Sam Dumont, president of the PA Picklers, says the sport is rising in the Alberni Valley. Many locals are joining the club and getting involved.
“Probably close to 500 people play pickleball locally. Last year our club at this time had 69 members and by the end of the year we had 123, and we haven’t even started our beginner series because that’s when we usually pick up more members as they get involved and get hooked.” – (Sam Dumont)
The club says the updates would allow for more people to play and for future growth of the sport in the area.
Plans and Funding Details
The upgrades would focus on repainting lines on the courts so that pickleball and tennis can be played. Sam Dumont estimates the cost will be about $150,000.
The PA Picklers are counting on money from donations and hope to receive grants to cover the total cost. City council has not made a decision yet, but the proposal is under review. If approved, work could begin soon.
What This Means for Port Alberni
If the plan goes ahead, Port Alberni will gain more places for people to enjoy pickleball. This could help keep residents active and support community recreation. With the sport growing fast, these changes may also lead to new programs and events in the future.
