Libro Centre’s Pickleball Court Launch: Eight new pickleball courts are now open at the Libro Centre in Amherstburg. The courts became available for public use on Monday morning. The project, approved last summer by the Amherstburg Town Council, cost $480,000 and includes fencing around and between the courts.
Courts Ready for Play
The courts were built to meet the growing demand for pickleball in the area. The sport has gained popularity among residents of all ages. These are the first dedicated courts for pickleball in Amherstburg. Before this, players used shared spaces like tennis courts or the ice-free arena floor at the Libro Centre.

Community Excitement
Deputy Mayor Chris Gibb said the new courts are already getting attention online.
“I didn’t think it could get any bigger than it already is but on social media I’m seeing a lot of chatter about all the people who aren’t into pickleball who are looking into learning how to play and getting into the game.” – (Chris Gibb)
Chris Gibb said the pickleball players had been asking for their own space.
“They’ve been using tennis courts, they’ve been using the Libro Centre arena when the ice is out and they’ve kind of had to jerry-rigged pickleball courts. So they’re very excited to have eight dedicated courts to their sport.” – (Chris Gibb)
Use and Management
The courts are open to everyone. The Town of Amherstburg also reached an agreement with the Amherstburg Pickleball Association. The group will manage their leagues on the courts.
“Where they have purchased time at the facility and they will run their leagues, similar to the way Amherstburg Minor Hockey runs the hockey leagues.” – (Chris Gibb)
Why It Matters
The new courts meet the growing demand for space to play pickleball in Amherstburg. The project shows how popular the sport has become in the town. It also gives the community a new way to stay active and socialize. With public access and organized league play, more people may now join the sport.
