Amherstburg Pickleball Court Expansion: The Town of Amherstburg celebrated the grand opening of eight new pickleball courts on Saturday morning, June 21, 2025, at the Libro Credit Union Centre. Town officials, including Mayor Michael Prue, joined members of the Amherstburg Pickleball Association for a ribbon-cutting ceremony. These courts give local residents a new place to play the fast-growing sport without leaving town.
A Major Step for Local Pickleball
Although the official opening was held Saturday, players have already been using the courts since early June. The new courts are open to the public, with organized play planned by the Amherstburg Pickleball Association.
“It helps us compete,” said Michael Prue, the mayor of Amherstburg.
Pickleball has grown quickly in Amherstburg, matching trends seen across North America. Many local players previously traveled to other cities to find court space.
“For many years, people have had to leave Amherstburg to play pickleball, and so now it’s so nice to be able to have a facility right here in our own county,” (Linda DiPasquale, Vice-chair of the Amherstburg Pickleball Association).
Community Support and Future Plans
During the ceremony, the Amherstburg Pickleball Association presented a cheque for over $24,000 to the town to help pay for some of the infrastructure.
“So to contribute to anything required for the courts in terms of development, maintenance, we’re also going to be doing fundraising for some larger scale projects like permanent seating, possibly lighting, definitely some sunshade,”(Linda DiPasquale).
The full project, which included fencing, cost $480,000. The association hopes to host large pickleball tournaments in the future now that they have more courts.
Looking Ahead
These new courts mark a key moment in Amherstburg’s recreation growth. With added space, the town can now support more players, attract visitors, and boost the local economy. The Amherstburg Pickleball Association also plans to keep investing in improvements that will make the courts even better for the community.
