Douglas Park Pickleball Charity Tournament: The Douglas Park Pickleball Club will hold its fifth charity tournament from July 3 to 5 at 20550 Douglas Crescent in Langley. The event, which runs daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., will raise money to help Douglas Park Community School fund autism assessments for children in need.
Last year, the tournament raised $25,205.97. Kristina Crosgrey, an event organizer, said,
“Douglas Park Pickleball’s annual charity tournament raises money to support the Douglas Park Community School, providing autism assessments for kids whose families couldn’t otherwise afford them, and wouldn’t otherwise get the timely help they need. Once assessed, these families then have access to many supports which are life changing.”
Players from Near and Far
This year, 254 players are signed up to play in 330 events, with some players entering more than one category. The youngest competitor is 14, and the oldest is 79.
“We’ve got players coming from the Island, the Okanagan area and all over the Lower Mainland/Fraser Valley. We do have a few players coming from Ontario as well as California.”(Kristina Crosgrey)
Daily Schedule and Activities
Thursday, July 3, will be Senior’s Day for players 60 and older and will also include some men’s and women’s doubles. Friday will feature mixed doubles (ages 60 and up) and singles matches. Saturday is reserved for men’s and women’s doubles, and Sunday will host mixed doubles games.
“It’s free to the public to drop by and watch the action,”. “This action-packed, four-day event features great athletes (young and old), onsite barbecue, vendors, raffles and fun. You’re invited to bring the family, cheer on our players and take part in our fundraising activities.”(Kristina Crosgrey)
Building Community and Support
The tournament is open to anyone who meets Pickleball Canada’s criteria. Most players are from British Columbia, but some are traveling from other provinces and the U.S. The event not only supports an important cause but also brings together people who love the game and want to make a difference.
With many families relying on early assessments and help, the money raised will provide real support that can change lives. The Douglas Park Pickleball Club hopes this year’s tournament will be even more successful and help even more children.
