Langley Pickleball Tournament Aims to Raise $25K for Children’s Autism Support

Langley Pickleball Tournament: Hundreds of pickleball players gathered at Douglas Park in Langley City to raise money for Douglas Park Community School. The fifth annual charity pickleball tournament began on Thursday, July 3, with the goal of collecting $25,000 to help fund autism assessments for children in need.

The event featured 256 players competing in about 330 matches across singles, doubles, and mixed doubles. Kristina Crosgrey, a member of the Douglas Park Pickleball Club and an organizer, said, “I believe we’re on track to do it,” referring to matching or beating last year’s total of $25,205.97.

Players traveled from all over to join the tournament. While most came from the Lower Mainland, others arrived from the B.C. Interior, Vancouver Island, Ontario, Washington State, and California.

Strong Support and Quick Registration

Kristina Crosgrey noted the tournament is very popular. “It’s a very well received tournament,” she said. Registration opens each March and fills up quickly, often within a day or two. Many players end up on a waiting list.

One reason for the high turnout is the usually sunny July weather. Another is the welcoming atmosphere and sense of community that pickleball brings.

Fundraising and Fun

While matches took place, players could buy tickets for a 50/50 draw and two raffles. Prizes were set up beside the courts for everyone to see between games. The money raised will cover autism assessments for kids whose families cannot afford them.

Pickleball has grown rapidly in popularity. Kristina Crosgrey described it as a paddle sport like tennis or badminton, but more accessible. “Anyone can play. It’s an accessible sport,” she said. The game uses bright plastic balls and square paddles, requiring both skill and strategy.

Impact and Community Building

The tournament not only raises money but also strengthens community ties. It offers a chance for people of all ages to connect, stay active, and support a good cause. With strong support and participation, organizers hope to continue growing the event in future years.
