Fredericton Set for First Indoor Pickleball Courts—Game-Changer for Winter Play

Fredericton Indoor Pickleball Courts Opening: Fredericton could soon have its first private indoor pickleball courts. Ken Anderson, president of BackSpin Pickleball Fredericton, plans to open a six-court facility inside a warehouse behind the Fredericton Co-Op by October, offering leagues, memberships, and drop-in play during the winter months.

Creating a Space for Players

Ken Anderson received the keys to the warehouse this week and said renovations will begin soon. The idea came after he and his wife struggled to find places to play when summer ended.

“It’s really a place to have fun, to get together, and have a good time. In Fredericton, we have winters that are sometimes unforgettable for the wrong reasons,

so we looked at providing a way for pickleball in Fredericton, and the sport to grow.”(Ken Anderson)

Anderson, who previously played basketball for over 30 years, picked up pickleball about 18 months ago. He said the indoor facilities they saw in Florida inspired them to create something similar at home.

Support from Local Club

Ann Marie Wood-Seems, president of Pickleball Fredericton, confirmed the club has already agreed to rent space at BackSpin.

“We have kind of explored every avenue to increase the amount of court time that we have and we’ve pretty well reached the maximum in Fredericton,”

Ann Marie Wood-Seems said.

“So for us to have access to additional court time is a very positive thing.”

Pickleball Fredericton has about 400 members, with more than 300 playing regularly. The group has seen major growth in the last two years.

Growing Demand for Courts

Outdoor courts are available at Willie O’Ree Place, Nashwaaksis Middle School, and Queen Square Park. Six new outdoor courts were added at Willie O’Ree Place last year.

In the winter, players have relied on church gyms, fitness centers, and the Abony Family Tennis Centre. Without a permanent home, players have had to move equipment from site to site.

Ann Marie Wood-Seems said the new facility will make play easier. The club is also still exploring the option of creating its own dedicated space in the future.

Looking Ahead

Prices for BackSpin Pickleball Fredericton have not yet been set. Ken Anderson said the focus is on building a welcoming space that can serve the city’s growing pickleball community year-round.
