Lions Park Pickleball Court Upgrade: The City of Medicine Hat has started construction on new pickleball courts near Lions Park. The project began last Wednesday and aims to meet the growing demand for the sport, which officials say is the fastest-growing in North America.
Court Layout and Features
According to project manager Jeremy Patton from the city’s parks and recreation department, the site was previously used for tennis with temporary pickleball courts. Now, the new design will dedicate the southern half to four permanent pickleball courts.
“The southern half will be four pickleball courts and nothing else. The northern half of the court will be a tennis court, but will also then have the lines painted for four drop-in pickleball courts,”(Jeremy Patton).
He added that when tennis is not being played, people can bring their own nets, making it possible for up to eight pickleball games to happen at the same time.
Improvements for Players and Residents
The facility is being expanded so the pickleball courts meet regulation size. To reduce noise for nearby residents, sound barriers similar to those at the Big Marble Go Centre will surround the courts.
“We’re surrounding the whole facility with accused defense, very similar to that which is on the pickleball facility at the Big Marble Go Centre. To try and make the activities a little quieter for the residents that live close to that area.”(Jeremy Patton)
Drainage and Surface Longevity
The project also addresses drainage issues. The old courts sat lower than the surrounding area, causing water problems.
“Raising the facility a little bit will help to ensure that we have positive drainage and will help the surfaces on there last a lot better than maybe it has done previously,”(Jeremy Patton).
Timeline
The construction is expected to be completed by mid-October. Once finished, the updated facility will provide more space and better quality courts for pickleball players in Medicine Hat.
Why It Matters
Pickleball continues to grow rapidly across North America, and Medicine Hat is adapting by providing improved facilities. The addition of permanent courts and better infrastructure will make the sport more accessible and enjoyable for both casual players and serious competitors in the community.
